It’s almost the New Year—and if you’re like many, you might already be thinking about resolutions. But here’s the truth: it’s never too late (or early) to start, and small, intentional steps can make all the difference. Over the years, I’ve noticed a few common “keys” that separate those who stick with their goals from those who give up. Let’s break them down so you can start the year strong.
1. Become Part of a Community
The most consistent factor among those who succeed is support. Whether your goal is health, career, or personal growth, having a partner—or better yet, a small group—holds you accountable. Surround yourself with people who challenge you, cheer for you, and push you toward something greater. Success is easier and more enjoyable when you’re not doing it alone.
2. Set SMART Goals
SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. “Exercise more” or “eat better” is too vague. Instead, ask yourself: How often? How much? By when? Make sure your goals are realistic and meaningful to you, and give yourself a clear deadline. A goal without clarity is just a wish.
3. Keep the End in Mind
Visualization is powerful. See yourself achieving your goal and imagine the real-life benefits. Picture yourself running that 5K, enjoying a healthy body, or being organized enough to host friends and family. Your brain cannot tell the difference between visualization and reality, so start practicing success today.
4. Break Goals Into Small Steps
Big goals can feel overwhelming. Break them into manageable chunks. Want to run a marathon? Start with a mile, then three, then six. Looking to declutter your home? Start with a drawer, then a closet, then a room. Small wins build momentum, confidence, and motivation.
5. Celebrate Along the Way
Achieving a goal is a journey, not a single moment. Celebrate every step and involve your community. Share your successes, encourage others, and remember: progress is worth recognizing. These celebrations reinforce your habits and create accountability that keeps everyone moving forward.
It’s easy to think “I should have started on January 1st,” but remember the saying: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is today.
